Because no one would befriend her, she thought. Walking through the grasses she didn't see anyone. A harmless snake slithered past her hooves. She didn't spook, merely turned in a different direction, veering around it and then continuing.
But why won't anyone befriend me? She thought, though she knew the answer well-Because I'm an outcast. Why do I have to be? That's what I don't have the answer to. That's what I ask. The question that echoes, giving me my name, the first time it echoed was Autumn. She thought back to then, it was such a long time ago. Well, not really, actually...
She broke from her memories to a sound, a crack. It was small but her ears pricked, head up. Her tail flicked as she listened more, black strings snapping the air to ward off pests that gathered on her auburn coat this hot day. What could it be?
As her eyes darted around, they caught something. The slightest movement from behind one of the few trees around. She couldn't tell what it was, but her eyes narrowed. Something about this was strange... As she moved to see what it was, and caught a better glimpse, she realized it wasn't something she'd seen in years.

Rogan stopped moving as he stepped onto a branch. It snapped and the birds all around him fled at the noise. Cursing himself, the hunter walked out of the tree line and stopped again when he saw the horse. The hunted smiled and held out an apple he carried with him. He offered it to the horse. "Here you go, girl," he said softly.

The birds could flap their wings and fly away. She couldn't, can't. She is trapped here, with them circling her and lashing out at her every move, she is like a small animal trapped by coyotes, no escape, only confusion, and betrayal. Hurt, and loss. For her, loss of life. Her soul...
She watched each movement the human made. She was curious, but was held back with fear. Practically flinching at his words, she remembered the only time she'd had an encounter with a human. It was when... Pain flashed to the scar she had on her chest. It was from a rope, burning her flesh as it rubbed.
Snapping out of remembrance, she stared at him, looking up from the ground. This world was so unforgiving, why would he be different, why would any human? She'd tried befriending horses before... and gotten hurt. She'd never tried with humans. But weren't they dangerous? She'd thought so. Oh well. Because one was cruel, why did the others have to be? She took a step forward, and the wind blew, catching his scent and carrying it to her. She smelled...blood.
Her eyes flashed wide. What was it from? Before moving again she had to find out. But to find out, she had to move closer... Another step forward, more cautious this time. She stretched out her neck and tried to catch the aroma again. It was hardly there. But was there. Oh well, if there wasn't much of it... She took another couple steps, though still very careful. One more step and she'd be able to grab the apple. She stopped to think, should she?
She did, though wondering if it had been a mistake. She sniffed the apple, it wasn't poisoned, so she took it. Crunching on it, the crisp taste filled her mouth. Mm... She took the rest of it. She took a step back, still frightened a bit at the blood scent, and stopped there. Peering at him, to try and see the source of blood. Though it was barely there, there was some.

Rogan smiled at the horse as he pulled his hand away slowly. She had taken the apple. But he could tell she was wary of him. Could she smell the blood of the red horse from a few weeks ago. Or maybe she was smelling the fresh wound on his back from where he had met a bear a few days ago. Or his lifetime of hunting still trailed after him. Rogan made sure not to look her in the eyes, and that was when he noticed the scar on her chest. "What happened there?" he asked softly as he made a motion towards the horse.

He didn't seem to dangerous after all. His eyes were kind, and he didn't resemble any predator of horses. Her ears flicked back and forth, one staying towards him to listen as he spoke, its black tip curved slightly. She understood. But couldn't communicate. She only whickered, from deep in her throat. As he reached to point, she stretched her neck and sniffed his hand. It wasn't the blood. Perhaps something he carried? Somewhere else? She didn't know.
Other movement caught her alert eyes, and she turned her head, watching. A rabbit, just a rabbit. Turning back to him; it hadn't been a threat she'd noticed. Her curious brown eyes met his.

Rogan smiled at the horse as he slowly made his way forward. He reached out to stroke her face gently, his eyes staying locked with hers. Maybe he should stop his hunting for the rest of his life. Smiling, Rogan took another step forward. "You're a pretty horse."

She would've shied, but for some reason didn't, not even at his touch. Maybe she was right to have stayed. He was being more friendly than other horses had been... She stared deep into his eyes. Nothing broke the silence, as if the world was in a trance. Only a bird overhead was moving, and the tree branches as a breeze passed.
It was cooling off. The evening was beginning. Would he go? No, the question wasn't that. The question was, if he left, would she follow?

Rogan smiled once more, gave her a gentle pat on the nose and offered her another apple. "You're a pretty horse," he said again before setting the apple down and turning to leave slowly. He limped slightly, his back twitching from the bandage on it. He hadn't been to the ranch yet, and would go down to see about getting it sewn and bandaged properly.
